'The Thieves Who Couldn't Help Sneezing'
On Christmas Eve, Hubert is returning from an errand to the town when he is set on by three robbers who tie him up and take his horse. Hubert manages to free his feet and finds his way to a house with an apparently abandoned feast on the table. There he learns of a plot to rob the house and when Sir Simon and his family and servants reappear, Hubert has to convince tham of his honesty - which he does by unusual means, with comic results.
Hardy's story first appeared in Father Christmas Magazine in 1877 and reveals a perhaps unexpected sense of humour. The New Hardy Players' version has been adapted by Jennifer Bailey who also directs.
