Memorial Candles Light the Way to St Catherine’s Chapel, Abbotsbury on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
Abbotsbury Heritage Fayre raising funds for the fabric of St Nicholas Church invites you to St Catherine’s Candles for the fifth year running.
A thousand candles will light the path up the hill to St Catherine’s Chapel on Saturday, May 29. Each candle in memory of someone close.
A simple ecumenical service accompanied by local musicians will be held in the chapel at 8.00pm. There is standing room only in the chapel but the service will be relayed to those outside.
This will be the first of a series of simple services, which are held each month until St Catherine’s Day in November.
After the service those who wish may with assistance light one of the memorial candle placed around the perimeter of the chapel.
The candles can be seen for miles around and are a wonderful sight.
This year those who are able are invited to join a group who will be walking from Hardy’s Monument along the Ridgeway to Abbotsbury and on to the Chapel. This walk, which will be led, will begin at 5.00pm and will take approximately 2 hours. Suitable clothing and footwear is advised. Cars may be left at Hardy’s at the driver’s own risk but it is suggested walkers be dropped off*. The organisers are also delighted that the Archdeacon, The Ven Paul Taylor will be taking part in the walk and service.
Light refreshments will be available in the marquee at the bottom of Chapel Hill; the marquee will also be the viewpoint for those unable to climb the hill and 4x4 transport can be arranged if required.
Each memorial candle costs £2 and are available from the organiser Tricia Houlberg. For more information on the walk, memorial candles or the 4x4 transport please telephone 01305 871085 or email tricia@houlberg.co.uk.
* Lifts can be arranged from the Rodden Row car park, Abbotsbury (4.30pm) by prior arrangement with the organisers.
