This year the elements thwarted any chance of lighting the thousand candles to St Catherine's Chapel. The gale force winds on the hill meant that it was impossible to light the candles. Some were positioned behind a sheltered wall for people to light for themselves but these were not visible to the visitor.
The service did take place with a full congregation in the Chapel. |
St Catherine's Chapel, Abbotsbury, Dorset.
Built by the Abbey in the late 14th century, the chapel is valuable sea mark set in the historic coastal landscape and part of the built heritage that survived the reformation.
St Nicholas Church
The Parish Church of St. Nicholas in Abbotsbury is an attractive church built of the golden local stone.
The new church was built in the fourteenth century, the western tower was added in the early fifteenth century and the church building was enlarged and remodelled at least twice in the next hundred years or so.
During the civil war, the church was the site of conflict - the Jacobean pulpit has two bullet holes in it from the time that Colonel Strangways resisted a Parliamentary force under Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper in 1644.
Following the addition of various interior fittings, including a gallery, the architect Arthur W. Blomfield restored the church in about 1886.
A candle can be purchased to remember someone by, proceeds to St Nicholas Church, Abbotsbury Fabric Fund.
4x4 vehicles will be available to carry those people who would have difficulty in walking up to the chapel before and after the service. Please inform the organisers beforehand to ensure a place.
